The situation

Abba Cakes is a well-established bakery with a large online presence and two physical shops serving customers across Cheshire and the surrounding areas.

Over time, their website had become increasingly difficult to manage, slower than modern customers expect, and wasn't providing the smooth online ordering experience needed to support growing demand.

At the same time, staff were managing orders, enquiries, and customer communications across multiple systems, making it difficult to maintain consistency and identify opportunities for upselling or improving customer service.

The challenge wasn't simply creating a better website. It was creating a connected digital ecosystem that improved the experience for customers and staff alike.

The work

We approached the project as a complete digital transformation rather than a website redesign.

The first phase involved rebuilding the website using a modern headless architecture, with Next.js powering the frontend experience and WooCommerce remaining as the e-commerce engine within WordPress.

This gave Abba Cakes the best of both worlds: a significantly faster and more responsive customer experience while retaining the flexibility and familiarity of WooCommerce behind the scenes.

Alongside the website rebuild, we developed a bespoke internal order management platform designed specifically around the way the business operates.

The system:

Pulls orders directly from WooCommerce

Imports customer enquiries

Prioritises requests by urgency and fulfilment date

Suggests production and booking schedules

Improves communication between staff and customers

Creates opportunities for upselling and repeat business

Finally, we introduced the foundations of a long-term content system designed to increase both online visibility and footfall into the physical stores, creating a more connected relationship between digital marketing and in-store sales.
